Hello, My name is Allen Garner. I have been playing guitar since I was a young teenager of 15 back in 1985. In the 90's I was in a local band with one of my fellow workers and a few friends. We had a blast playing together but life happenes and the family life quickly took front stage for most of us and so our dreams of stardom quietly faded into a mortgage and a minivan full of beautiful children. I ended up joining a few guitar meet up groups and had many years of enjoyment playing with many other musicians. After a while I began to think about how I spent an aweful lot of money on guitar repairs, maintenance and buying guitars for my collection. I began to experiment with fixing and maintaining my own guitars which quickly led to noticing a lot of common issues with guitars. Then I got a crazy idea. I thought what if I could redesign these guitars and use them as an inspiration to build my own. Then it happened. I made the craziest decision of my life I began to make my own guitars. Little did I know what a monumental task that would be. I highly miscalculated all that goes into making guitars and so the journey began. I spent about 10 years tugging on the shirt tales of as many luthiers as I could get to talk to me. Poor guys I probably bugged them to death. I gleaned as much information as I could ever searching for more information, strategy, approaches and style. Then came along youtube what an incredible invention. I watched every luthier repair and build video I could click on for years while experimenting with building technics and applying what I learned. Then one day I made the mistake of letting my friends know what I was doing. Soon I had guitars all over my house in various states of repair or being custom built for all my friends and their friends etc. Well, I decided since most of my time is spent doing this wonderful craft anyway, I might as well make it my career. So, I started looking up luthier schools and training for certifications for the major guitar companies contacting the factories, making a business plan, saving up for the starting costs, getting insurance, buying machines, tools, parts and supplies. Then I started building a website and engaging in all the wonderful steps of starting a business, and the next thing you know I was a luthier and I have loved every minute of it since. |
